Recipe: Simple Maki Sushi

We have finally read enough recipes, watched enough sushi videos on YouTube and bought all the exotic ingredients to make our very own maki sushi. Here is our experience.

This YouTube video has the best instructions and it is easy to follow.

From left to right: Seaweed, wasabi, soy sauce, rice vinegar, pickled ginger, sticky rice.

What we have learned from our first attempt to make sushi is that two things are essential: the special sticky rice has to be well prepared (as seen in the video) and you need a VERY sharp knife (which we didn't have:))

Another thing we improvised with is the fish. As we couldn't find fresh salmon we used smoked salmon. It doesn't have the same taste but we still liked it.

And here is Nerma rolling the sushi rolls:

It was Nerma's idea to add fried sesame which really added an awesome aroma. Although our favorite combination is salmon and avocado, we used cucumber this time.

Again, a sharp knife is essential. Next time we will know better:)

It is pretty easy once the sticky rice is ready.
Unlike Nerma, I love to eat it with lots of wasabi and pickled ginger (Nerma says pickled ginger tastes like soap:))

You should give it a try!

Love,
Emina
